Dirty Harry Analysis

Clint Eastwood as Harry Callahan (aka 'Dirty Harry')

These two shots are close-ups of the protagonist (above) and the antagonist (below right). These shots help show the emotions of the characters in the final scene. The use of levels shows who is in command during the final sequence (the antagonist is looking up at the protagonist, who in turn is looking down on him).  The physical state of the characters reinforces this because the antagonist can be seen with a broken nose and blood on his arm, whereas the protagonist is relatively unscathed.

In the shot, the viewer can see many high buildings therefore the audience know it is set in a city, a common setting for crime thrillers. The close up of the police badge earlier in the opening also confirms that it is set in San Francisco. As Clint Eastwood is walking from the murder scene to where the killer was, there is a panning shot which allows us to see more of the city further confirming to the audience that it is set in the city of San Francisco.
